The Porsche Cayman is a rear wheel drive coupe, with mid-range engine, marketed in two seater design. The German automaker Porsche AG started producing the vehicle in the year 2005, but it hit the automotive markets for the first time during 2006.
It is currently in its second generation, and sold as a midsize coupe. Porsche entered into a contract with Valmet Automotive for assembling the Cayman.
First Generation (2005-2008)
The Cayman was released as the first coupe in Porsche lineup, during 2005. It was a high performance vehicle, which had 3.4L- flat six boxer engine during its early days, and then it adapted the same power-train as seen on the Porsche 997 (3.8 liter engine), along with lift system and inlet timing valve. The Porsche 997 was more efficient in terms of fuel economy, though not as powerful. It had a 2.7 liter M97 engine, and the usage of new power plants terminated in the year 2007, as Porsche started upgrading the models like Boxster S and Boxster.
In the base Cayman model, you can find the five speed manual transmission, while the manual six speed transmission is available on Boxster S. A five speed auto- transmission is standard on Boxster S and regular Boxster series.
Other options incorporated in the model are disc brakes made up of ceramic, and active shock-absorbers.
Performance
In comparison to the other sports car from Porsche, the Cayman S with optional alloy wheels with 19 inches completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in just 8 min and 11 sec, while the normal time taken by Cayman S models was nearly 8 min and 20 sec.
One cannot compare the Cayman S with the sport car, especially due to its highly efficient manual transmission.
Second Generation (2009-Present)
Porsche introduced their second generation Cayman in the year 2009. The engine displacement of standard Cayman version was improved from 2.7 to 2.9 liters. The new engine is capable of generating 20 hp extra, improving the overall output to 265 hp. The Cayman S and Cayman get an additional 10hp boost. The Porsche Boxster is now incorporated with a fresh front bumper, and the design of the front signal lamps made up of LED’s is indeed sure to catch a second look from the passers-by. The Tiptronic gear box of Porsche is replaced with a seven speed dual transmission clutch.
With the help of the dual clutch transmission, the Cayman S can pick the speed of 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds.
Safety
The safety measures of Cayman include air bags at the side thorax area, traction control and stability, disc brakes with anti-brake option and head-bags.
Special Features and Interior Design

The interior of Porsche Cayman are designed in sporty style and top notch materials to give a luxurious feel. The DNA hi-fi performance of the Porsche Cayman is displayed by the tachometer mounted at the center console, and the readings at the digital speedometer can be accessed with the trip computer. The analog speedometer looks very attractive with the large range marks and tiny numbers.
